Neither did Heather Shirkey, whose nine-year-old son, Jace, was recommended braces by his dentist in Charlottesville. Interceptive treatment, or phase 1 treatment, may be recommended at a child’s first orthodontist visit to address immediate concerns. By around age seven, most children have a mix of baby and adult teeth, which provides Dr. Weiler with valuable insight to diagnose potential issues and determine if treatment is necessary. Then, as the teeth and jaws develop through puberty, phase 2 treatment can be implemented if any teeth need further alignment.
