The Importance of Phase One Treatment: Jace’s Story

Did you know that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child should have their first visit to the orthodontist at age seven? Neither did Heather Shirkey, whose nine-year-old son, Jace, was recommended braces by his dentist in Charlottesville. Heather had been confused, figuring that his dentist meant when he was older, but the reality was that Jace needed treatment as soon as possible.

After finding Dr. Weiler through an online search, Heather felt comforted by the rave reviews and appreciated how convenient our location was for her family. From the moment she scheduled her first free consultation, Heather knew she’d made the right choice. The professionalism and warm, welcoming demeanor of our staff reassured her that this was the perfect place to come for Jace’s treatment.

Jace came into Weiler Orthodontics with a cross bite, a condition in which the front teeth fit inside the lower teeth when biting down normally. With time, a cross bite causes damage through the continuous wearing down of the tooth enamel. Fortunately, Jace was able to start treatment the same day as his consultation, kicking off his phase 1 treatment plan.

Interceptive treatment, or phase 1 treatment, may be recommended at a child’s first orthodontist visit to address immediate concerns. By around age seven, most children have a mix of baby and adult teeth, which provides Dr. Weiler with valuable insight to diagnose potential issues and determine if treatment is necessary. Then, as the teeth and jaws develop through puberty, phase 2 treatment can be implemented if any teeth need further alignment. We pride ourselves on our tailored treatment plans, ensuring that every child, just like Jace, has access to the happiest and healthiest smile possible!

Heather, in particular, appreciated our clean and peaceful atmosphere, as well as the friendliness of our staff. We had so much fun talking and laughing with the Shirkey’s, and are happy that they enjoyed their visits as much as we enjoyed having them here. Jace even added that Dr. Weiler was really funny and had a great smile! Thanks, Jace!

We always like to remind parents that their smiles matter too, with Heather being no exception. Our tailored financial solutions have made it possible for Heather to consider orthodontic treatment for herself, something her family had to postpone due to financial constraints when she was younger.
